Construction zone safety continues to be an important issue in Michigan. West Michigan state Representative Mark Huizenga testified before the state House Transportation Committee this week about an effort to revolutionize the equipment used in work zones to keep both workers and drivers safe. He says studies show that digital flashing lights in such zones will work.

“We know that the flashing beacons alert the motorists and let them know a posted speed limit is in effect at that particular time,” Huizenga said. “Digital displays in the work zones, speed limits, and further speed reduction reduces speeds from five to seven miles per hour per static signs. We know that speed kills, and we know that we want to keep our workers safe.”

Huizenga says that on average, 14 construction workers and drivers die in construction zone accidents each year. He said studies show the flashing signs are an effective way to reduce injuries and deaths in construction zones
