The progress of the Soo Locks construction project was discussed during a media roundtable on Thursday. The project includes the construction of the new lock chamber. Lieutenant Scott Katalenich is a commander with the Detroit District Army Corps of Engineers who spoke at Thursday’s forum.

“The new lock will be 1,200 feet long, 110 feet wide, and 32 feet deep, matching the dimensions of our existing Poe Lock and adding a great deal of redundancy and resiliency to the Soo Locks complex,” Katalenich said.

The construction of the new lock chamber will include rehabilitating downstream approach walls. According to the Army Corps, the Poe Lock, opened in 1969, was the last lock built in the Soo Locks system. It’s the only passage between Lake Superior and the lower lakes.
