Stopping in Benton Harbor Tuesday to check out work being done to replace lead water lines was Governor Gretchen Whitmer. She reiterated her commitment to have all of the lead lines in the city replaced within 18 months. The governor’s office says it will take $30 million to do the work, about $18.6 of which has been secured through the state budget, the MI Clean Water plan, and the EPA. Whitmer says she’s confident the goal of replacing the lines will be reached, especially with $1.3 billion headed Michigan’s way from the federal bipartisan infrastructure bill specifically for water. Joining Whitmer Tuesday was Benton Harbor Mayor Marcus Muhammad, who said boots are on the ground and money is being put to work.
