A top doctor at Beaumont Hospital in southeast Michigan is warning residents about a high number of people going to the hospital for treatment of COVID-19. Beaumont’s director of Infection Prevention and Epidemiology, Dr. Nick Gilpin told Michigan News Network there’s been a sharp increase in the number of people hospitalized.

“With more cold weather on the way, with people starting to make plans for the holidays to get together, I think it’s an important time just to let everyone know that we’ve got to stay vigilant, we’ve got to continue to do all of those things,” Gilpin said. “There’s very little that I can do from here inside the hospital. This is really a community effort.”

Gilpin says most of the patients in the hospital are unvaccinated. He says young people and schools are driving the increase in new cases. COVID-19 hospitalizations across the state reached a 6-month high on Thursday.
