The South Haven City Council is saying no to being paid more. The council voted down raises last night after councilmember Chris Campbell moved to turn it down.

“I’d like to make a motion to thank the commission, but would like to respectfully decline the increase.”

Rosalie Picotte serves on the commission that recommended the raises and said Campbell’s motion before she got a chance to speak caught her off guard.

“We know that you’re here to serve your community, but we do want you to think for the future. We do want you to think that compensation is not a bad word. We do want you to think that nothing has been raised since 2008.”

The pay for the mayor will remain at $1,200 per year with $25 for every meeting attended and council members will remain being paid $800 per year with $25 for every meeting attended. The Local Officers’ Compensation Commission will meet again and recommend raises again next year.
