On the campus of the University of Michigan, the flu is back. Associate epidemiology professor Emily Martin told Michigan News Network there have been more than 500 cases reported in just over the past month, most of them in the past few weeks. It’s the first return of the flu since March of 2020.

“We typically do see our biggest flu numbers in January or February in most years, but flu tends to be pretty unpredictable most years, and we’ve seen patterns with other respiratory viruses acting off their normal pattern,” Martin said.

Martin says it is concerning coming as many students will be traveling home for the holidays. Most cases have mild to moderate symptoms.
