89 water systems around Michigan have honored by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention with Water Fluoridation Quality Awards. The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services says a total of just under 1,300 water systems nationwide have received the honor for 2020. Southwest Michigan municipalities to be recognized are Benton Harbor, Benton Township, Bridgman, Buchanan, Cassopolis, New Buffalo, Niles, St. Joseph, and Hartford. The state health department says fluoridation is the addition of fluoride to the water to help prevent tooth decay. It’s been recognized by CDC as one of ten great public health achievements of the 20th century. It’s estimated municipalities save money as a result of fluoridation investment. The savings range from $1.10 to $135 for every $1 invested.
