A Request for Proposals has been issued by the city of Benton Harbor as it begins an effort to replace lead water service lines around town. Approximately 4,000 lead lines will have to be replaced between now and May of 2023. The city says the RFP means it’s now taking bids from contractors to do the projects. The RFP can be found on the city’s website, the website of Abonmarche, and the state of Michigan is also helping to spread it. The work will involve replacing the lead service line from the city’s water main to the curb stop, the curb stop to the first shutoff valve in the home, or both. The lead or galvanized pipe lines will be replaced with copper lines. The city is also telling residents to beware of scams related to this work. Therefore, everyone should know it’s being done at no cost to residents and homeowners. Don’t fall for someone telling you otherwise.
