Congressman Fred Upton and Congresswoman Debbie Dingell last week sent a letter to the Biden administration asking for more federal help in Michigan for hospitals as COVID-19 rates have soared. There are now 44 additional medical professionals working at hospitals in the state, provided by the federal government. WSJM News asked Upton if the Biden administration decision to send them was in response to his letter.

“It was,” Upton said. “We reached out to the White House, we’ve had a number of conference calls over the last couple of months. They know the situation here in Michigan, and as Congress comes back into session this week, I know a number of us are going to reach out again to see what we can do to help our providers take care of the folks that are in desperate need of attention.”

The additional staffing teams, with 22 medical personnel each, are supporting staff at Beaumont Hospital in Dearborn and Spectrum Health in Grand Rapids. The teams include registered nurses, doctors, and respiratory therapists. Upton’s letter to the Biden administration also requested therapeutics and rapid testing supplies.
