Governor Gretchen Whitmer on Wednesday afternoon released a message regarding the shootings at Oxford High School. Four students were killed in Tuesday’s incident in Oakland County.

“We have a responsibility to protect each other from the gun violence public health crisis that we all face as Americans,” Whitmer said. “We have to build a state where no one is afraid to go to school or work or house of worship or even their own home. My gratitude goes out to the first responders and the medical professionals still helping those in the hospital, and my heart – like any mom or day in Michigan – is with the parents.”

Whitmer says school shootings are a uniquely American problem, but now is the time to focus on the victims who are fighting for their lives. Killed in Tuesday’s shooting were 14-year-old Hana St. Juliana, 17-year-old Madisyn Baldwin, 17-year-old Justin Shilling, and 16-year-old Tate Myre.
