Congressman Fred Upton is expecting to see federal action soon on the nation’s chip crisis. He tells WSJM News as the auto industry continues to be plagued by a shortage of chips, Congress is looking to boost their domestic production with the Creating Helpful Incentives for the Production of Semiconductors for America, or CHIPS Act.

“As the Senate is moving forward on passing a defense authorization bill – this is a massive bill that includes pay raises for our troops, supplies for the defense department all over the world – the CHIPS Act, which would really encourage investment in chip production in this country, may be part of that legislation in the Senate.”

Upton says it would make sense to him to attach the CHIPS Act to the defense bill if that will get it to the president quickly. The act includes $2 billion in support for semiconductor chips used by the automotive industry. The legislation was approved in 2020, but never received an appropriation.
