Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy says she has now charged 18 students with making copy cat threats in the wake of the Oxford High School shooting. Worthy said she is also mulling charges over six additional threats. Worthy told Michigan News Network it’s important that students realize these charges are serious.

“Whenever you make such a threat, it’s not fun, it’s not funny, it’s not a game, and what we’re saying is we will take it seriously,” Worthy said. “There could be severe consequences. It’s beyond. Even if you don’t get charged with a crime, a college or university that’s admitted you may hear about this and take away their admittance and we’ve seen that happen. An employer may fire you.”

Worthy says while copy cat threats are not uncommon, the sheer number has been more overwhelming than usual.
