Among those who suffered trauma during the school shootings at Oxford High School are the deputies who ran into the line of fire and tried to save lives, sometimes in vain. Oakland County Sheriff Mike Bouchard told Michigan News Network this week it has been tough.

“On top of all of that, we have a ton of people who are off with either injuries in the line of duty, or we have a number of our folks that are fighting cancer, and we also have a whole bunch off with COVID,” Bouchard said. “A lot of these folks are being asked to work double shifts in the midst of all this.”

Bouchard says he is encouraging deputies to seek counseling. He says seeking help is not a sign of weakness, but a sign of strength.
