The Dowagiac Police Department says a pedestrian is dead after being hit by a train on Thursday. Officers were called to the train crossing on Park Place in Dowagiac around 9:50 a.m. They learned the victim had been at Harding’s near the crossing and was walking east on Park Place. He attempted to walk across the crossing as a southbound Amtrak train approached. Witnesses told police the man did not appear to see or hear the train and continued to walk across the tracks and was struck. The victim is a 69-year-old Dowagiac man whose name has not been released. The train and the Amtrak route were stopped for several hours while the incident was investigated.
