The volunteers who drive southwest Michigan veterans to medical appointments have been honored by Berrien County. Speaking during Thursday’s meeting of the Berrien County Board of Commissioners, Veterans Services Director Lee Lull said this month marks the 23rd anniversary of the Disabled American Veterans Transportation network, which started in Berrien County in 1998.

“During 2021 up to today’s date, our volunteer drivers have made a total of 121 trips and transported 201 veterans to and from their VA medical appointments in Battle Creek and Mishawaka,” Lull said.

Lull said the volunteer drivers use two vans to take veterans to medical appointments. They were given an honorary lunch and certificates on Thursday as a thank you for their service. Lull said they’re recruiting new drivers now. All you need is a standard license and to pass a physical exam.
