Police around Michigan made 122 traffic stops and issued 50 citations for illegal passing of school buses during a recent school bus safety enforcement campaign. Dennis Raymo with the Michigan Office of Highway Safety Planning told Michigan News Network committing a traffic violation that involves a school bus is a serious thing.

“That’s pretty scary for everybody involved,” Raymo said. “The stops also garnered 29 other citations and three misdemeanor arrests. We feel that these are effective patrols, and obviously we’re trying to ensure that our young people out there make it to and from school safely.”

In its second year, Operation Safe Stop is an enforcement campaign that was conducted statewide from October 18-22. Law enforcement agencies worked with their local school districts to provide education and enforcement to their communities.
