Many people in Michigan will celebrate Christmas at church. Midnight masses and Saturday services are scheduled at more than 200 churches across the Detroit area. Detroit Archbishop Allen Vigneron will be leading midnight mass at the Most Blessed Sacrament in Detroit on Woodward. He spoke with Michigan News Network.

“It’s an ancient tradition in the church to keep watch in spirit with the shepherds who were on watch on the hillside in Bethlehem, and I think it’s a particularly poignant way to be in touch with the graces of Christmas,” Vigeron said. “It certainly means that for me, and I’m encouraged by the people who come. It’s just just my celebration. Their faith and their devotion inspires me.”

Vigneron said the pandemic and shooting in Oxford have made it tough for many people, but God hasn’t abandoned them. COVID pandemic safety protocols will be in place at churches including masks for all parishioners and social distancing.
