The Van Buren County Sheriff’s Department’s Marine Unit has received an award for its work during a campaign this year to catch drunk boaters. The U.S. Coast Guard has awarded the unit with a certificate of merit for taking part in Operation Dry Water. The Coast Guard writes during the effort from July 2 to July 4, the Van Buren County Sheriff’s Department’s Marine Unit made contact with 168 boaters and 105 vessels. It issued 57 warnings and nine citations and busted three for boating under the influence. The Coast Guard says all “members involved served as exemplary ambassadors alongside the Coast Guard,” making the waters safer.
