Governor Gretchen Whitmer is calling for a variety of tax adjustments in 2022 to help the working class. In her State of the State address Wednesday night, Whitmer proposed a repeal of what she called the retirement tax, which she said would save a half a million households an average of $1,000 per year. She also called for an increase in the Michigan Earned Income Tax Credit to get it back to the level of a decade ago, before it was slashed.

“Restoring the EITC lifts more than 22,000 people out of working poverty and it sends 730,000 families an average refund of almost $3,000 that they can use to pay the bills,” Whitmer said.

Whitmer also said the state must work to reduce the price of insulin, which she said on average costs nearly $100 for a single vial.

“In the Michigan Legislature, there have been bipartisan bills introduced to cap the cost of insulin to $50 bucks a month. We all agree. Insulin costs too much.”

Whitmer said the state should implement a combined $2,500 electric vehicle rebate. That’s $2,000 for the car and $500 for in-home charging equipment. Whitmer touted successes like the auto insurance reform package and the recent announcement by General Motors of a nearly $7 billion investment in the state, road work, and programs to get more workers a college degree.
