The Buchanan Area Senior Center is offering free tax preparation services in its area. Director Adam Burck tells WSJM News the center teams up with the AARP for the program each year.

“We partner with the AARP Tax Aid program and they train volunteers to do people’s taxes with the special program they have,” Burck said.

Burck says the trained volunteers can also help seniors apply for credits like the home heating credit. Due to COVID, those who use the service will have to make an appointment to speak with a preparer for 15 minutes and then the preparer will take their documents and prepare the taxes off site.

“Our taxes preparers that are the trained volunteers will do the taxes and then bring them back here, and we call when they’re ready to be picked up.”

Burck says they helped about 90 seniors get their taxes done last year. Only those who live in the service area of the Buchanan Area Senior Center can use the service there. Burck says the Niles senior center is also offering tax preparation. So is the Berrien Springs center. For others, call them to ask.
