AAA is reminding drivers to be careful and to take step to be safe in this wintry weather. The agency says it expects to receive a high number of road service calls for extrications, dead batteries, and flat tires. It tells drivers if they do find themselves stranded, it’s best to stay in the vehicle and wait for someone to find them. AAA says you can make gas last longer by not continually running the engine and instead turning it off and then only back on again to let the car reheat. Then shut it off again. The agency says you should avoid driving on shoulders so emergency vehicles have access, and pack a well-stocked emergency kit that includes a cell phone car charger, first-aid kit, extra blankets, hats, gloves and coats, plenty of drinking water, and snacks. Electric vehicle owners need to keep in mind frigid weather may reduce the range of their vehicles. If you get stuck in snow or ice, straighten the wheel and accelerate slowly. Add sand or cat litter under the drive wheels to help avoid spinning the tires. Finally, remember to slow down. If you hit the vehicle in front of you, you will be at fault, no matter the road conditions.
