With temperatures expected to warm up in Michigan on Wednesday into the 40s and even 50s in some areas, the U.S. Coast Guard says there’s no such thing as safe ice. Coast Guard Station Tawas Chief Petty Officer Michael Davis spoke with Michigan News Network.

“Never trust ice,” Davis said. “Anytime you go out…think about wearing a life jacket when you go out on the ice. If you fall through the ice in your winter gear, it’s extremely difficult to pull yourself up out of the ice.”

Davis says be especially cautious taking a vehicle on the ice. He adds be cautious taking a vehicle on the ice because it’s hard to rescue someone in a vehicle if it falls through the ice. The Coast Guard rescued 18 snowmobilers on an ice floe that broke away in Marblehead, Ohio about a week and a half ago.
