A new video has been released by Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel warning about a common phone scam. In it, her parents answer a phone call from someone claiming to be Nessel and in need of help. The scammer says she needs to be towed and has to pay for it will an Amazon gift card. Nessel says calls like that are fake.

“Scamp artists will call, text, or email people trying to get them to buy a gift card from Amazon or some other company and then ask for the gift card number over the phone,” Nessel said. “Remember, gift cards are for gifting, not for paying people over the phone.”

Nessel warns about scammers who claim to need a gift card as payment for something. Sometimes, they pretend to be a loved one in distress, or they could claim to be from a utility company. Nessel advises everyone no legitimate service will need to be paid with a gift card.
