People in Michigan may soon be paying less for drugs. Governor Whitmer signed legislation that lowers the costs of prescription drugs and holds pharmacy benefit managers accountable for prices. Before signing the bill at a Meijer store in Lansing, the governor said some people are paying thousands for medication each month.

“This bipartisan legislation will improve transparency and ensure that we’ve got fair drug pricing,” Whitmer said. “We’ll ensure Michiganders have access to all of the information about the back end cost and profit of their prescription medication, and this will help lower inflated prices.”

Representative Julie Calley, who sponsored the legislation, says nearly one-third of Michigan residents stopped taking their medication because of the cost. Parts of the laws take effect immediately while others begin in 2024.
