Police in Benton Harbor had a busy weekend, responding to multiple reports of stolen vehicles. Benton Harbor Department of Public Safety Director Dan McGinnis told city commissioners this week despite being a bit understaffed, his officers were still able to recover the vehicles.

“There’s been a rash of stolen vehicles,” McGinnis said. “We’ve had actually, I think so far, Friday three minor chases with stolen vehicles. In each vehicle, guns were recovered. So this weekend was pretty busy. Friday, a stolen vehicle, arrests made, guns recovered. Saturday, we had another one where somebody actually stole two vehicles from one house. We recovered both of those.”

McGinnis said there was one incident in which an officer was injured with a slice to his hand. He is OK, and was able to continue the chase, seizing meth, a gun, and cash. No shots were fired. McGinnis spoke after commissioners approved a new surveillance camera system for the community. He said having those cameras would be helpful in situations like these.
