There’s a push in Lansing to suspended the 27 cents per gallon state gas tax. Republican leaders called for a vote in the Michigan House Wednesday on legislation that would suspend the gas tax for six months, from April 1 through the end of September. The Senate could follow soon. State House Speaker Jason Wentworth told Michigan News Network he hopes the legislation passes unanimously.

“I think that everyone that serves in the state House has been hearing from their constituents about the rise in inflation,” Wentworth said. “It’s hurting families, it is hurting everyone across our state and everyone’s hearing about it.”

Governor Gretchen Whitmer joined five other governors Tuesday in calling for the federal gas tax of 18 cents per gallon to be suspended. When asked about the state gas tax, a spokesperson for the governor said the best way to bring down gas prices without impacting the ability to fix the roads is by suspending the federal gas tax.
