An event being held in May will take bicyclists along the Kal Haven Trail all the way from Kalamazoo to South Haven. Friends of the Kal-Haven Trail Vice President Jeff Green tells WSJM News the 35th Annual Kalamazoo TrailBlazer Event will kickoff Kalamazoo Bike Week May 7. He says many riders go the full distance.

“Being a railroad bed, the terrain is relatively flat, but when it passes through on its way from Kalamazoo to South Haven… it just drops gradually through open farm land and thousands of acres of blueberry farms, and the trail is generally tree covered most of the way,” Green said. “You’ll pass through villages that used to be. You’ll see some heritage signs telling you what used to be there.”

Green says some riders bike into South Haven, have lunch there, and bike back. He notes recent developments have made it possible to go from the Kal Haven Trail to other trails that extend all the way to Port Huron, meaning you could bike the length of the whole state. He says they couldn’t hold the Trailblazer event last year, and it feels great to bring it back. You can find out about signing up for the ride at KalHaven.org.
