A new pedestrian walkway will be built in South Haven along Aylworth Avenue from Kalamazoo to LaGrange Streets. Public Works Director Bill Hunter tells WSJM News the paved walkway will be on the south side of the street and is possible thanks to a $134,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality Improvement program.

“There’s no pedestrian walkway on both sides of Aylworth, and you will find people actually walk in the street in that section,” Hunter said. “So, our hope is to improve that safety of that corridor.”

Hunter says the walkway will be ten feet wide.

“It’s more than just a sidewalk, it’s multiuse. So, you could have bikes, walkers, whatever.”

Hunter says a lot of pedestrians walk along that route, many in the road. The walkway will improve safety. The city’s match for the project is $180,000 and work could start in the fall.
