Congressman Fred Upton says President Biden’s budget proposal, unveiled this week, is almost certainly dead on arrival. The president on Monday released the $5.8 trillion plan. It increases taxes on the wealthy and seeks to reduce the deficit. Upton tells WSJM News it also greatly increases spending.

“We know about inflation, we know what drives it, we know what’s happening on the energy side with the price of gas starting day one with the cancellation of the Keystone pipeline,” Upton said. “But as you pour through the president’s budget that he unveiled this earlier week, in essence, there are double digit increases in every single category. So, forget inflation. This is way above inflation. Whether it’s the Department of Commerce, or you name the department, they’re all double digit increases.”

The Biden budget increases defense spending and includes $1 billion more for Ukraine. It also increases spending for law enforcement, clean energy, and climate change resiliency. The plan is a statement of priorities for the administration and can serve as a guide as Congress crafts the actual budget. Upton says hearings are scheduled, and he expects whatever is approved will be much different.
