Senator Gary Peters is reacting to President Joe Biden’s decision to release oil from U.S. reserves in order to address spiking gas prices. Peters told Michigan News Network it’s an appropriate step given the current circumstances.

“We are right now in the middle of a crisis that ‘s impacting the global supplies of oil,” Peters said. “I think it’s the right thing of us not to buy Russian oil. We should not be funding Putin’s illegal and murderous campaign against the Ukrainian people. It’s an opportunity for us to use our reserves so we can continue to meet the needs of American families.”

The release would amount to 180 million barrels of oil. President Biden said it would act as a “wartime bridge.”
