Lead Filters Still Available To Benton Harbor Residents

Benton Harbor residents are being reminded filters are available to them, free of charge, to remove lead from the water in their homes. Representatives of the Berrien County Health Department told city commissioners this week the EPA has verified the efficacy of the filters.

“The Berrien County Health Department has been passing out filters for over three years, but yet, still today we have residents who don’t know that they can get a filter, how to use a filter, and how to install them. So, we’re really trying to make sure that we are going above and beyond, that every resident knows that if they’d like to use a filter, where they can get it, how they can install it, and connect to those resources.”

The health department says using a filter is voluntary, but anyone who wants one can get one by calling. A public awareness campaign involving social media and possibly a billboard is planned to spread the message now that the EPA study is complete.
