As the trial against four men accused of plotting to kidnap Governor Whitmer continues, University of Michigan counterterrorism expert Javed Ali says homegrown terror is a difficult thing to prove since groups don’t usually break the law until it’s too late.

“Understand that line of what spurs someone from just being angry and upset to violence and having that anger be the basis for that violence, and willing to act out on it, that is very difficult and it’s also very difficult for law enforcement and the intelligence community to spot it”

Ali says militias, and far right groups, have been a staple in Michigan since the 90s but most don’t commit crimes. But Ali believes that militias themselves might be against the law.
