Governor Whitmer and other Democratic leaders have made their first comments regarding the acquittal of two men who were accused of plotting to kidnap her. Two others will be retried after a west Michigan jury was unable to come to a decision on charges against them. Governor Whitmer didn’t specifically mention the case during the Democratic Party’s Endorsement Convention over the weekend, but referenced it during her speech to supporters.

“I know at times it can feel discouraging. There are some weeks we wake up and read the headlines, and it feels like a gut punch,” she said. “We want to work together and focus on the issues that really make a difference in people’s lives right now, to build a stronger Michigan.”

Whitmer told the crowd she won’t give up in her fight to make Michigan a better place to live. Talking with the Detroit Free Press, Attorney General Dana Nessel expressed concern about the verdicts saying the governor is in a scary place and the verdicts were “really concerning.” Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson said election workers and election officials all across the country and in Michigan are facing potential violence.
