You drive on them everyday, but a new report says 24% of Michigan’s roads are in poor condition and seven percent of the state’s bridges are in poor condition or structurally deficient. Rocky Moretti, with TRIP, a Washington D.C. based national transportation research nonprofit, says it’s costing the average state household more than $4,800 a year.

“We have seen in Michigan that the state over the last several years has been able to increase its investment in transportation, which is obviously been critical in addressing an aging system of roads, highways, and bridges, and at the end of last year, we saw the approval of the Infrastructure, Investment and Jobs Act,” Moretti said.

Moretti says that’s resulted in 33% federal transportation funding for highways and transit in Michigan. He says the level of transportation funding over the next decade will have a significant bearing on quality of life in Michigan and the economic burden to households in terms of traffic crashes, unreliability on the state’s transportation network, and extra vehicle operating costs.
