Southwestern Michigan Tourist Council Director Millicent Huminsky is retiring. The council announced Thursday Huminsky is stepping down after 37 years of working to drive tourism to the region. She will retire at the end of October, and Southwest Michigan Tourist Council officer manager Marcy Simpson will replace her. Tourist Council President Tim Kading says Huminsky has been instrumental in promoting visitorship to events, attractions, and recreational activities in Berrien, Cass and Van Buren Counties. The growth of Southwest Michigan’s tourism industry markedly increased under her leadership. She joined the Tourist Council in 1985, when there were only ten hotels and motels in Benton Harbor, St. Joseph and Stevensville. These days, there are 25 in the same communities. Over Huminsky’s years with the Southwest Michigan Tourist Council, the area has seen an expanding number of visitors, new wineries, breweries, distilleries, festivals, restaurants, wedding venues, and indoor and outdoor activities. Huminsky says, “It’s been an amazing ride. I’d do it all over again. This has been the best career in the world.”
