The South Haven Police Department says a South Bend man is facing charges of armed home invasion and assault with a dangerous weapon after trying to break into his ex-girlfriend’s home early on Monday. Officers were called to the home when the woman reported the suspect was breaking in and that he had a gun. When officers arrived, the man had already left in his vehicle. He was apprehended after a brief pursuit, and police say the woman was not injured. A search of the area with police K9 Ryker turned up a semi automatic handgun in a ditch after the suspect allegedly threw it from the vehicle. The 36-year-old was taken to the Van Buren County Jail. Police say the discovery of the gun helps from both an evidence standpoint, but from a public safety performance standpoint.
