Michigan is seeing gains when it comes to recycling. Matt Flecther with the Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy told Michigan News Network Michiganders are recycling more now than ever before.

“People now know that it’s important to know what goes in the bin,” Flechter said. “They know that recycling, doing it correctly, is important. It’s important for worker safety, making sure that we’re not putting something in the bin that’s unsafe. It’s also important to make sure that the value of the material is as high as possible so than businesses and manufacturers in Michigan can use it.”

Just in time for Earth Week, EGLE says it’s investing more than $7 million in grants to communities and businesses across the state to continue making recycling accessible. Recycling in Michigan has reached a new all-time high, up 35.4% from pre-2019 levels, according to a new analysis released this week by EGLE.
