An independent autopsy performed on the body of 26-year old Patrick Lyoya confirms he was shot in the back of the head. Grand Rapids police say Lyoya was shot to death April 4 by an officer after a short chase and struggle that occurred after Lyoya was pulled over for having an improper license plate on his car. Attorney Ben Crump, who is representing the Lyoya family, read from the independent autopsy report completed by former Wayne County Medical Examiner Dr. Werner Spitz.

“Patrick Lyoya died as a result of a single gunshot wound with an entrance wound in the back of the head,” Crump said. “Death was instantaneous when the gun was fired.”

The Kent County Chief Medical Examiner is awaiting toxicology results before finishing Lyoya’s autopsy. That could take up to 60 days. Michigan State Police are investigating the shooting.
