More than $100,000 has been raised for Emergency Shelter Services with its annual Love Your Shelter capital campaign, just as the organization welcomes a new director. ESS says the Love Your Shelter campaign aimed to raise $50,000 to rebuild the family shelter. Thanks to support from the Berrien Community Foundation, the Hanson Family Foundation, the Frederick S. Upton Foundation, and the Felland Fund, ESS doubled its goal by raising more than $100,000. The money will go toward foundation updates for the shelter, including repairs to flooring and plumbing, kitchen and bath updates, and windows. Meanwhile, ESS says its new director is Reshella Allen-Hawkins of Benton Harbor. The Benton Harbor High School and Lake Michigan College graduate joined in ESS in 1998 as an administrative assistant and has worked to help provide housing and other resources to families since.
