The Berrien County Board of Commissioners has closed the books on the 2020 round of Community Development Block Grant funding focused on COVID-19 relief. Speaking to commissioners Thursday, Assistant Community Development Director Katie Montoya said the county received $377,000 in the emergency funds toward the beginning of the pandemic.

“It is specific, unbudgeted COVID-19 unbudgeted county expenditures to prevent, prepare, and respond to the coronavirus,” Montoya said.

Montoya said the county worked with the United Way, the Berrien Community Foundation, and other non-profits to get aid to residents.

“We were able to help them spend and expand their dollars to assist various agencies and resources countywide in all populations.”

Montoya said the county spent the funds mostly on vulnerable populations, purchasing equipment, and paying for services. She spoke at a public hearing to close out the CDBG funding. The money has all been spent.
