The Orchards Mall in Benton Township has found a new use for one of its vacant store spaces, and it’s hoping the approach could mark the start of a new life for the facility. Mall Manager Christina Castaneda tells us the former Carson’s store has been turned into a vendors area with a consignment element set to open next month. She says local merchants sell mostly hand-made items at the space on Saturdays and Sundays from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. They started in January, and as the summer approaches and many expect to be selling at festivals, the idea of launching a consignment corner to continue sales was born. The consignment area will open May 21. Castaneda says the new idea has been working well, and Midwest Expos holds displays of exotic animals periodically. They’ll be there this Saturday, and Castaneda says they have plans to display a lion and a tiger in July. She invites everyone out to the mall this weekend to check out the new attraction.
