Have you booked your summer vacation yet? Prepare for sticker shock with Michigan hotels. David Fishman with Cadillac Travel says the price of hotels is up an average of 25 to 30% this year. If you want to save money, Fishman says, you might want to avoid the more touristy areas.

“The Traverse Cities, the Petoskeys, the Charlevoixs, the Harbor Springs, a lot of those spots on the west side,” Fishman said. “Maybe go Spring Lake or go to some other areas that are not as popular as those bigger areas. Instead of Mackinac Island, maybe find some smaller town in Indian River or Black Lake, things like that.”

Fishman says cities like Chicago and Cleveland might also be less than resorts on the lake. He blames high demand for Michigan travel, along with increased labor and supply costs for the jump in prices.
