The Michigan Department of Transportation is suspending construction projects on the state’s roads for Memorial Day weekend to make for smoother travel for those who are vacationing. MDOT spokesperson Nick Schirripa tells WSJM News they’re getting out of the way when possible. However, in some cases, they can’t.

“Obviously, of the big ones there is the I-94-US-31 project right there in Benton Township,” Schirripa said. “The big impact there is for I-94. We’re going to still have everything shifted over on to one lane of I-94, two lanes in each direction.”

Schirripa says other areas that will still be affected by ongoing construction include I-94 in Kalamazoo, where some lanes are closed, and I-69 in Calhoun County north of I-94. Schirripa says Memorial Day weekend this year is expected to see travel up by nearly 8% from last year.
