Finland and Sweden are seeking NATO membership, and Congressman Fred Upton says that’s very encouraging. He tells WSJM News Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has had the opposite effect that Vladimir Putin intended.

“Remember Putin’s drive was to dismantle NATO,” Upton said. “If you look back, NATO’s stronger than ever before. I expect that both Sweden and Finland will be allowed to enter NATO, so we’ll be a larger force, and we’ve seen the other NATO countries confess they’re going to get up to at least 2% of spending their GDP on spending for defense. So, we’ve seen big increases there.”

Upton says he expects the U.S. Senate to approve Sweden and Finland being admitted into NATO next month. He’s also working on getting a House resolution in support, as well, although that isn’t needed for NATO entry. He thinks Turkey’s reluctance to let the two countries in will eventually be dropped.
