State lawmakers have passed two resolutions urging the Congress and federal and state agencies to immediately address the ongoing fertilizer price increases and shortages that are severely impacting Michigan farmers. Representative Steve Carra from Three Rivers says costs have doubled and in some cases tripled over the past year.

“Farmers are struggling to keep up,” says Carra. “I hear from people in my district and from colleagues facing the same issue almost every week. Farmers are being forced to ration their fertilizer or come up with other less desired ineffective solutions.”

Industry experts cite COVID and weather related supply-chain issues plus the war in Ukraine for price hikes. More than 800,000 people work in Michigan’s agricultural industry, which contributes more than $100 billion annually to the state’s economy.
