A meeting will be held next week for Berrien County residents to learn about the results of a noise study the Michigan Department of Transportation has done on an I-94 project planned for next year. MDOT spokesperson Nick Schirripa tells WSJM News the agency will work on I-94 between Stevensville and Benton Harbor. With a major rebuild like that, it’s time to do a noise study and update the highway to meet new standards.

“We are revisiting the new federal standards from when the highway was first built,” Schirripa said. “Imagine the comparison, if you but an older home and you were to do a remodel project, you’re going to have to bring the electric up to code or the plumbing up to code. That’s the same concept. The thresholds and the codes have changed since the road was first built. So, now that we’re coning back and rebuilding it, we’re going to have to come back to code, the new federal standards.”

Schirripa says the work could result in some new noise blocking walls on the sides of the highway, similar to what you see in Kalamazoo. A few are proposed and you can see the locations in the MDOT noise study report. You can see it here. The MDOT virtual meeting is set for next Wednesday, June 8 at 5 p.m. To attend, click this link. The work planned for I-94starting next year will cost $90 million and it will involve the rebuilding of the highway and several ramps.
