Michigan State Police and other agencies are stepping up speeding enforcement starting Saturday. They will do a week-long “Great Lakes, High Stakes” campaign from June 18 until the 26 after saying they have seen, along with other agencies nationwide, an “alarming rise in speeding and fatal crashes” since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. Crashes in the state increased 15% from 2020 to 2021, and deaths rose from 1,083 in 2020 to 1,131 last year. Insurance industry studies show around 112,000 speeding tickets are issued daily, or 41 million a year with the average fine between $115 and $135.
