The University of Michigan has raised tuition for in-state students by $558 dollars for the coming year. Regent Denise Ilitch says its the 39th consecutive rate hike and it has to stop.

“This continual increasing has limited opportunities for middle and and working class students, some would say, being squeezed, to take advantage of a Michigan education and impact the economic diversity of the student body at a time of increasing hardship,” says Ilitch.

The university has increased financial aid to students who qualify to compensate for the increase, which will bring tuition to just under $17,000 a year. Ilitch says the school needs to find new revenues as well as ways to save costs.
