A new report says this has been one of most violent years ever in our nation’s schools with school fights and other events on the rise. Joe Sbar is a psychologist in a school district in the U.P. and says this has been building for a long time, even in the years before the COVID-19 pandemic.

“In the service area where I work, we saw higher rates of behavior referrals, we saw higher of kids qualifying for emotional impairment eligibility, and we also saw higher rates of kids who needed threat assessments to determine if they were at risk to themselves or others than we had at any point previously.”

Sbar believes the pressure to achieve, as students are falling even further behind due to the pandemic, is making things worse along with an ongoing shortage of teachers and school counselors.
