Work will get started Monday on a Michigan Department of Transportation project on I-94 in Berrien County. MDOT spokesperson Nick Schirripa tells WSJM News it’s to prepare for a larger project next year on the highway from Red Arrow Highway to Britain Avenue. Crews will work on the highway in both directions from around Stevensville to Benton Harbor starting Monday.

“We’re building some crossovers, widening some bridges, adding lanes to bridges, doing some work over Pipestone road, just getting ready for the big project that starts next year, and that’s the I-94 rebuilding project between I91 and Red Arrow Highway and Britain Avenue,” Schirripa said.

Schirripa says this will affect traffic on I-94.

“It involves some lane closures. The left lane in both directions  will be closed. There are three lanes through there in each direction, so it’ll be down to two lanes for the better part of the year.”

The work will also mean lane closures on Pipestone Road near I-94 and some total closures of Pipestone when MDOT works on the bridge. Detours will be posted for Pipestone when it closes. The project starts Monday and will continue through mid-November.
